KwaZulu-Natal IGBIS branch

The IGBIS Executive Committee is proud to announce the establishment of a third Regional IGBIS branch, this time in KwaZulu-Natal.

The KZN Cataloguers' Interest Group, initially known as the KZN URICA Cataloguing Interest Group, held their first meeting in May 2002, to discuss current issues relating to cataloguing. The group originally consisted of 7 cataloguers, representing the then University of Natal (Durban), Mangosuthu Technikon, Durban Municipal Library and Durban Institute of Technology. Louise Cloete of DIT was elected as first Chairperson and she was succeeded in 2003 by Sushiela Naidoo from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Since 2004, the group has dropped the "URICA" part of its name and grown considerably to include cataloguers from the KZN Provincial Library Services and the former Natal Society Public Library, now the Umzinduzi Public Library. The group has been meeting quarterly since 2005, with attendance figures averaging 30 cataloguers.

The process of considering IGBIS membership began in 2004 with a view to moving the group to a more formal status. There were initially some reservations about the implications of LIASA/IGBIS membership requirements and costs. Sushiela Naidoo approached the IGBIS National Representatives at the 2006 LIASA Conference and at the group's final meeting held in November 2005, it was unanimously decided that the KZN Cataloguers' Interest Group would be transformed to a fully operating IGBIS branch.

The National Executive Committee welcomes Susheila Naidoo and her group as an official IGBIS branch.
The other two IGBIS branches are currently operating in Limpopo, with Khomotso Maphopha from the University of the North as convener, and in the Free State, with Huldah Raubenheimer from the University of the Free State as convener.

IGBIS greetings,

Martha de Waal IGBIS
Communications Officer
